Candy Corn Halloween Cake

Happy Halloween, friends!  Does everyone have their candy and costumes ready?  I guess I should start by saying no candy corn were harmed in the making of this cake!  This is simply a candy corn inspired layer cake that I just had to share with you!

When I started working on this cake yesterday, my goal was to create a pretty Halloween cake for a party.  You guys know I’m all about the buttercream, so I thought the candy corn effect could look really cool.  I love projects like this because you never really know exactly how it’s going to turn out.

Armed with buttercream and a piping bag, I got to work and I’m quite happy with it.  If any of you would like to try this technique at home I have a few tips.  The first is you want to use a 3 layer cake because you’re going to need height.  The second is you want to use a good buttercream.  When I say good buttercream, I mean the real stuff.  Italian meringue or Swiss meringue – use what you’re comfortable with.  Last, use a big star tip for the effect.  The best thing you can do is test out a few different sizes to see what you like best.

I posted a photo on instagram yesterday when the cake was just starting to take shape and I think it’s a good guide if you’re going to give this a whirl.  You can see in that photo how I overlap the layers to create more dimension.  This cake has a lot of buttercream and I love how it looks so lush and festive!

I hope you all have a fun Halloween and a fantastic weekend!  Thanks so much to everyone who has already made the caramel apples.  I’m thrilled you guys are enjoying them!  I’ll see you next week with some new desserts!
