Glamour Peeps 2.0 with How-to Video

March 30, 2012 by bblondie 96 Comments

Glamour Peeps 2.0 with how-to video | ButtercreamBlondie.com

Easter is right around the corner which means it’s time to make the Peeps!  That’s right, Glamour Peeps are back in all their sparkle glory.  These little homemade peeps are my favorite makeover to date, and I couldn’t wait to make them again.  So grab your candy thermometer and disco dust because it’s time to make some candy!

For those of you who are relatively new to Buttercream Blondie, I made the original Glamour Peeps last year.  It all started with an idea to give Peeps a makeover.  I’ve always been a fan of Peeps, but homemade marshmallows are so much better!  I figured out a way to pipe the marshmallow to look like peeps, and then dolled them up.  Of course this means I had to zhush them up with some disco dust, and there was a feather boa involved.  The word ridiculous has come up once or twice 😉
This time around while the basic concept is the same, I changed up the colors and lost the feather boa.  There’s also a how-to video on these which I think is really helpful.  I had to watch it a few times this week when I was making them just to make sure I got my peep mojo back!  For my color scheme this year, there was no way I could pick just one color, so I went with an assortment of pretty pastels. Making five different color peeps out of one batch of marshmallows was ambitious, but it had to be done!  I’m so happy with how they turned out, look at that lavender!  What about the blue??

Glamour Peeps 2.0 with how-to video | ButtercreamBlondie.com

I think I might actually like them more than the pink!  I know, I’m shocked too.  Who am I kidding, I love the pink too.  There’s no way I can possibly pick a favorite, I even love the yellow.  I’ll give you more info on all the colors I used in the Notes section below.  For their eyes, I used a toothpick dipped in blue food coloring.

Glamour Peeps 2.0 with how-to video | ButtercreamBlondie.com

Well, I think you can probably tell by this point that I kind of love this project!  Enjoy the video, and have a great weekend!

Marshmallows:
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 4 egg whites
  • 2T. powdered gelatin
  • 4T. cold water
  • 1t. vanilla extract
  • food coloring of your choice – I used rose pink, purple, lemon yellow, leaf green, and sky blue.
  1. Mix powdered gelatin with cold water (add extra water if needed) and set aside.
  2. Combine corn syrup, sugar, and water in saucepan and bring to 235 degrees using a candy thermometer.
  3. While bringing sugar mixture to a boil begin whipping egg whites in mixer till soft peaks form.
  4. When sugar mixture reaches 235 degrees add gelatin and quickly stir to dissolve.
  5. Slowly add hot mixture to whipping whites.
  6. Add vanilla and whip till stiff.
  7. Add food coloring if desired.  Please note you only need a few drops.

Peeps:

  1. Cover a sheet pan with parchment paper.
  2. Cover parchment with powdered sugar(don’t be cheap)
  3. Fill a piping bag with marshmallow.
  4. Pipe a tear drop shape first.
  5. Then pipe the peep by squeezing the marshmallow on top of the tear drop pulling the piping bag up. Slowly release your pressure and bring forward.
  6. Allow peeps to dry overnight in a cool dry place.
  7. Brush lightly with water.
  8. Brush with disco dust.
  9. Place the eyes on them using a toothpick dipped in food coloring.

Notes:

* When you have marshmallow in the mixer make sure you keep the mixer on.  If you let marshmallow sit it will dry out and be useless.
* Put a lot of powdered sugar under the peeps.  They are very sticky.
* Disco dust colors I used: baby blue, baby yellow, baby green, pink, and baby pink.  I couldn’t find lavender, but the baby pink is not very pink at all, and worked perfectly.

Thank you so much for the video. It really looks fun, even if it is time consuming. I have to share with you that my seven year old son was watch this with me and at the end of the video he looks at me and says “Did she actually put those in feathers?!” LOL I thought it was cute. And they looked adorable in the feathers. 🙂

I always have a few that turn out a little funny looking! I don't use the little packets, so I always measure out 2 tablespoons of gelatin.

    >Not sure what happened but mine were a little stiff and when I tried to pipe the teardrop, as I released the pressure and pulled to make the tear drop part, the "peep" just dragged through the powdered sugar??? Some were ok but some ended up looking kind of like a blob?? Taste delicious though!! I will definitely try again. One question is you call for 2 T of unflavored gelatin, all I could find was packets and wondered if you used 2 packets or dumped them out and measured the 2 T. Thanks for posting! I love them.
